Chameleon Sensory Wall Panel | Tactile Sensory Wall for Sensory Rooms | School Sensory Walls
Bring colour, texture and character to a sensory room with the Chameleon Sensory Wall Panel, a large tactile wall feature designed by Mike Ayres Design for schools, sensory rooms, therapy spaces and multi-sensory environments.
Made from strong 15 mm birch plywood, the Chameleon combines brightly painted surfaces with an extensive collection of contrasting tactile materials. Different textures are positioned across the chameleon's body, legs, face and branch, encouraging users to reach, touch, rub, press and compare surfaces as they explore.
The bold green chameleon, colourful details and distinctive curled tail create an immediately engaging focal point. The tail is very eye catching, incorporating a rainbow of coloured mirror sections that introduce reflected light and additional visual interest.
At approximately 1370 mm high and 1030 mm wide, the Chameleon Sensory Wall Panel also provides a substantial decorative feature for larger sensory spaces, corridors, SEN settings and therapy rooms.
A Wide Variety of Tactile Surfaces
The Chameleon has been designed to provide plenty of contrast between smooth, soft, rough, firm and reflective materials.
Tactile and visual elements include:
-
Astroturf for a distinctive coarse, grass like texture
-
Yellow Tretford carpet
-
Pink mirror
-
Red Nomad matting
-
Green Burmatex carpet incorporated into the legs
-
Pink fabric for a softer tactile contrast
-
Blue Sand textured surface
-
Red and yellow dowel elements
-
Treadplate metal for a firm, patterned metallic texture
-
White tactile areas with coloured caps
-
Painted surfaces such as the branch
-
A yellow and blue eye, and pink mirrored lips
-
A curled tail made from a rainbow of coloured mirrors
The variety of materials makes the panel useful as both a tactile sensory resource and an attractive piece of sensory room equipment.
Therapeutic and Sensory Benefits
Developed in collaboration with HCPC-registered occupational therapists, the Chameleon Sensory Wall Panel can be incorporated into structured sensory activities as well as freely explored within an appropriate sensory environment.
-
Tactile sensory exploration: The contrasting surfaces provide varied tactile input through the hands and fingers, allowing users to explore differences in texture, firmness and surface pattern.
-
Sensory modulation and self-regulation: Purposeful tactile exploration can form part of an individual's sensory strategies. For some users, repetitive or structured touch activities may help organise arousal, support calmer engagement and make it easier to maintain attention in the moment.
-
Tactile discrimination: Comparing materials such as carpet, fabric, metal, mirror, textured paint and artificial grass provides opportunities to notice and distinguish different sensory qualities.
-
Active exploration: Users can reach towards, trace, press and investigate different parts of the chameleon, encouraging active participation rather than passive sensory stimulation.
-
Fine motor activity: Exploring smaller details, raised surfaces and individual tactile components can encourage controlled hand and finger movements.
-
Visual engagement: Bold contrasting colours, reflective mirror surfaces and the recognisable chameleon shape provide additional visual interest within a sensory room or learning environment.
-
Proprioceptive feedback: Pressing, rubbing and pushing against the firmer wall mounted elements can provide light proprioceptive feedback through the hands and upper limbs alongside the primary tactile input.
Supporting Ayres Sensory Integration® Practice
Where appropriate, an occupational therapist can incorporate the Chameleon Sensory Wall Panel into activities informed by Ayres Sensory Integration® principles.
For example, the different textures can be used within active, user led exploration where the therapist adjusts the activity to provide an appropriate just-right challenge and encourage an adaptive response.
Sensory Wall Panel for Schools, Clinics and Sensory Rooms
The Chameleon can add tactile activity without taking up valuable floor space, making it particularly useful when planning sensory rooms for schools and clinics.
It is suitable for use within:
-
School sensory rooms
-
SEN classrooms and specialist education settings
-
Multi-sensory environments
-
Occupational therapy rooms
-
Paediatric clinics
-
Hospital sensory spaces
-
Breakout and calming areas
-
Sensory corridors
-
Appropriate home sensory spaces
It can be installed alongside other sensory wall panels, sensory products and special needs equipment to create a broader range of activities within the room.
For schools looking for new sensory room ideas, combining tactile wall equipment with lighting, soft play, interactive equipment and other sensory therapeutic resources can help create a more varied environment while maintaining valuable clear floor space.
