Floor learning can encourage discussion, interaction and collaborative participation, but sitting directly on a hard floor may quickly become uncomfortable. The EN Classic Floor Chair combines the accessibility of floor-level learning with the support of an ergonomically shaped chair shell.

Unlike a conventional classroom chair, its low-profile design keeps the user close to the floor. Unlike a loose floor cushion or beanbag, it provides a defined sitting position and supportive backrest.

Because the EN Bob can accommodate both children and adults, teaching staff can sit at pupil level during floor-based activities. This can support more direct interaction while giving adults greater back support than sitting unsupported on the floor.

The EN Classic Floor Chair is designed to allow natural movement while sitting. Users can make small postural adjustments rather than having to remain completely still throughout an activity.

When the feet are placed securely against the floor, the user may also be able to press through their legs and create a gentle backward rocking movement. This movement is controlled by the user and can be stopped whenever required.

This makes the chair a useful form of active classroom seating or movement-friendly floor seating. However, it should not be confused with a dedicated rocking classroom chair, as its principal purpose is to provide stable, supportive seating for floor-level activities.

Use the chair on a level and suitable surface. Movement should remain comfortable and controlled, with supervision appropriate to the user’s age, abilities and the activity.

Sitting directly on the floor can make it difficult to maintain a comfortable position, particularly during longer reading, discussion or group-learning sessions.

The curved EN Classic shell provides support around the back and sides of the body. Its ergonomic shape encourages a more upright and organised sitting position while still allowing the user to reposition naturally.

Individual posture and seating requirements vary. Where a user has specific physical, postural or positioning needs, suitability should be assessed by an appropriate professional.

• Sensory modulation: small, self-directed movements may help some users adjust their level of alertness and remain more comfortably involved in the activity taking place.
• Proprioceptive feedback: pressing the feet into the floor and making controlled changes of position can provide feedback through the legs and lower body.
• Gentle vestibular activation: optional backward and forward movement can provide mild movement input. Individual responses to movement vary.
• Defined floor-level seating: the weighted base, supportive shell and close contact with the floor may feel more organised and secure than an unstable cushion or beanbag for some users.
• Self-regulation: users can choose whether to remain still, alter their position or introduce a small amount of movement during an activity.
• Participation: a comfortable and clearly defined seat may make it easier to take part in shared reading, group work, carpet time and therapy activities.

The EN Bob can be included within an occupational therapist-led programme when appropriate for the individual user and activity. It may support active participation and user-directed movement, but the chair is not an Ayres Sensory Integration® intervention by itself.

Durable adaptive responses and skill development depend on an appropriately assessed and delivered therapeutic programme, rather than equipment alone. Where Ayres Sensory Integration is intended, intervention should be delivered by a suitably qualified therapist and follow the ASI Fidelity Measure.

The EN Bob combines the established EN Classic Size 6 shell with a weighted low-level undercarriage. The added weight beneath the chair improves stability while retaining the ability to make controlled seated movements.

Raised edges around the base help maintain clearance between the chair and the floor, reducing the opportunity for fingers to become trapped when the chair is repositioned or gently moved.

The EN Classic Floor Chair is manufactured in a broad range of polypropylene shell colours. However, chairs will normally be supplied by Mike Ayres Design in a colour selected according to current stock availability.

A specific colour choice is not included as standard, so colours may vary. Product photography should therefore be treated as a guide rather than confirmation of the colour that will be received.

Where a particular colour is required for a classroom, sensory room, library, therapy setting or wider interior scheme, please contact Mike Ayres Design before ordering. Our team can investigate whether the required colour is available as a custom order.

A custom order may be available in one of the 16 standard colours listed above. The manufacturer may also be able to consider other colours outside its usual range in some circumstances.

Custom colours, minimum order quantities, additional costs and lead times must be checked and confirmed individually.

A requested colour cannot be guaranteed until availability has been confirmed by Mike Ayres Design and the manufacturer. Bespoke or custom-colour chairs may be non-returnable unless faulty.

The polypropylene shell has a smooth, easy-clean surface suited to busy classrooms, libraries, therapy rooms and shared educational spaces.

Clean using a soft cloth with warm water and a mild detergent. Dry the chair after cleaning and avoid abrasive pads, scouring products, solvents or harsh chemicals that may mark or damage the surface.

Where the chair is used outdoors, remove loose dirt and moisture before returning it to indoor storage.

Where a black chair is supplied, the black polypropylene shell is manufactured using 100% recycled plastic.
