Tactile Wall Tiles – Sensory Wall Tiles – Sensory Walls for Schools & NHS

Create a tactile wall feature that can grow with your space. Mike Ayres Design Hexagon Tactile Wall Tiles combine contrasting textures, bold colour and varied depth in a flexible honeycomb arrangement.

Choose individual Standard or Premium tactile tiles, add cost-effective self-adhesive felt tiles to extend the installation, or select the Complete 28 Tile Set for an impressive sensory wall display.

Suitable for sensory rooms, SEN classrooms, school corridors, clinics, hospitals, therapy rooms and other multi-sensory environments, the modular hexagon format makes it easy to create anything from a compact tactile feature to a larger wall installation.

Developed in collaboration with HCPC-registered occupational therapists and manufactured by Mike Ayres Design.

Layered birch plywood tactile tiles

Each Standard and Premium tactile tile measures 300 mm wide by 260 mm high. The tiles have birch plywood bases finished in clear lacquer and are supplied in randomly selected thicknesses of 9 mm, 12 mm or 15 mm.

Combining the three depths creates a more dimensional wall surface, adding visual interest alongside the contrasting tactile materials. Each tile has two pre-drilled, countersunk fixing holes for secure wall installation.

Individual tile thicknesses cannot be selected.

Acoustic felt tiles

The self-adhesive Acoustic Felt Tiles have the same 300 × 260 mm hexagon format, allowing them to fit neatly alongside the Standard and Premium tactile tiles.

Each felt tile is 10 mm thick and has a self-adhesive backing. They provide a cost-effective way to:

  • Add more colour to an installation
  • Expand the overall tactile wall area
  • Create flowing honeycomb arrangements
  • Connect groups of Premium and Standard tiles
  • Adapt the design to suit different wall sizes and spaces

The felt tiles are available as a kit of six. The Complete 28 Tile Set includes 12 Acoustic Felt Tiles.

Therapeutic benefits

  • Varied tactile exploration: Contrasting surfaces invite users to touch, trace, press and compare different tactile qualities. These experiences can support tactile discrimination and concepts such as rough, smooth, soft, firm, raised and reflective.
  • Sensory modulation and self-regulation: Access to a familiar or preferred texture can provide a predictable sensory focus. For some users, this may support calmer arousal, sustained attention or preparation for another classroom or therapy activity. Sensory responses are individual and should be observed by the supporting adult or therapist.
  • Active, child-led engagement: A varied sensory wall encourages choice, curiosity and purposeful exploration. Within an occupational therapy activity, the arrangement can be used to create an appropriate “just-right” challenge through locating, matching, comparing or sequencing textures.
  • Movement and hand use: Depending on installation height and activity design, reaching, pressing and tracing can provide light proprioceptive feedback while encouraging purposeful hand use, visual scanning, bilateral engagement and reaching across the midline.
  • Communication and learning: The colours, shapes and textures provide useful prompts for descriptive language, preference-making, matching, turn-taking and shared exploration in schools, clinics and therapy rooms.

When incorporated into Ayres Sensory Integration® intervention, these tactile wall tiles should form one element of an individualised, therapist-delivered programme. Equipment alone does not constitute ASI intervention or produce lasting skill development. Activities should follow the ASI Fidelity Measure and be graded by an appropriately qualified occupational therapist to encourage meaningful adaptive responses.
